The agricultural sector is the mainstay of many countries economies on the continent, yet it has seen a steady decline in productivity, and that restructuring program's put in place have struggled to turn things around."Africa must work towards bailing out the agricultural sector", she told the 9th Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Program Partnership Development Platform (CAADP PP) meeting held in March.
Stressing that for the next decade agriculture must be at the center of Africa's development, further stressing agriculture was key to creating jobs and stimulating economic growth as well as feeding the continents growing population, as well as addressing other emerging issues such as global food security and the effects of climate change on future food production.
She, however, noted that if Africa regarded agriculture as an investment, this could place Africa and CAADP at the centre of Africa's development.
As Africa celebrates 50 years of the existence of the AU and its predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), and with the CAADP commemorating 10 years since it was endorsed in 2003, the CAADP momentum is at its peak.
CAAPD is the flagship program of the AU and New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), designed to help African countries accelerate economic growth, eliminate poverty and hunger, and improve food security as well as improving nutrition.
